Everyday Person
I live in Manhattan with my wife Lindsay and two ungrateful cats, where I work as a pastor and a writer. I spent two years teaching math in a pretty rough, public school in Harlem (you can read about many of my experiences in older posts, or in my upcoming book inSignificant). Now we’re planting a new church in Inwood, the northernmost neighborhood of Manhattan.
Lindsay has a pretty killer food blog called Girl From Scratch.
Next to spending time with her, my favorite thing to do is hang out with the other “everyday” people of Everyday Church. I never dreamed I might be a part of a church like this– a spiritual family concerned with living the Bible (rather than just knowing the Bible).
After that, in no particular order, I like to: 1) Read anything, 2) Go camping, 3) Watch survival shows and daydream about camping, 4) Run trails for fun, not exercise, the way kids do, 5) “People watch” in NYC. We are strange and delightful, aren’t we?, 6) Annoy my cats, 7) Eat (especially food from Girl From Scratch), 8 ) Pray (that’s right, I actually “like” to pray– I think we’re supposed to).
I am very much an everyday person. Most of the time I don’t know what I’m doing and feel “in way over my head.” I think the only thing I’ve gotten better at over the years is asking for help– from God and from others. On balance, I’ll take the ability to ask for help over any other.
